UVA AICHE attended a tour of Richmond’s DuPont facility at the end of October. The event started with presentations about DuPont, Kevlar, and life on the job at the Richmond site. We were also fortunate enough to hear from former UVA CHE professor, Mark Aronson, who currently works at the facility. Following presentations, we networked with employees at lunch before making our way to the manufacturing floor to see Kevlar fiber spun and collected for shipping. Finally, the group participated in a team challenge to make a mock bullet-proof vest out of different combinations of Kevlar fabrics. We had to take cost, weight, and effectiveness into account when creating our samples. Then, they were tested with real bullets! The tour was a great way to not only hear form industry professionals, but also to engage in some of the work and decision making that DuPont employees do on a daily basis.

Thank you to DuPont and all who helped make this event a success!
