The spring has been busy with professional and networking events!
Industry Talks were given by UVA Chemical Engineering Department’s Halsey Professor, Jeanne Stahl, as well as former department professor, Ramon Espino. Professor Stahl and Espino shared their experiences and gave advice about their work at Merck and Exxon Mobil respectively. The events were well-attended by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as current faculty. The talks were especially informative to undergraduates who are still exploring different interests and job opportunities.
Undergraduate students also attended a trip to the Merck plant in Elkton, VA. It was an all-day event featuring networking opportunities, a luncheon, and a tour of the facility. It was a great experience for the students to be able to see the processes that have been described in the classroom put into action. Students were also able to build relationships with Merck and its employees, which will hopefully create more opportunities for UVA CHE students at Merck in the future!
Finally, AICHE’s ChemE Car team attended the AICHE Spring Mid Atlantic Regional Conference at the University of Delaware this past weekend. Members attended a guest lecture by esteemed University of Delaware faculty, followed by a poster showcase, and then the ChemE Car competition. The 10 ChemE Car members represented two teams, a pressure car and a battery car. Unfortunately, the teams did not place in the car competition, but are excited to begin planning for next year!
