Graduate students
are granted financial support so they may concentrate completely
on their studies.
Financial support
ordinarily consists of a stipend and payment of all tuition
and fees including health insurance. Although financial aid
awards are made one calendar year at a time, students accepted
into the doctoral program may expect to receive support throughout
their graduate work so long as their progress toward the degree
is satisfactory.
The Department
provides financial aid for graduate students in several forms:
- Fellowships
are grants free of any requirement for teaching or research
and carry no restriction on research area.
- Graduate Research
Assistantships allow students to devote their full time
to research and related coursework. Funds are provided by
an external agency or by the University.
- Graduate Teaching
Assistantships require teaching services in engineering
classes for up to 20 hours per week.
Highly qualified
Ph.D. candidates are eligible for Dean's fellowships which
provide an additional $2000/yr stipend as well as University Fellowships which provide $10,000/yr
supplementary stipends. Traineeships are available through
National Institutes of Health Biotechnology
Training Grant and the University's Program on Interdisciplinary Research in
Contaminant Hydrogeology (PIRCH). Chemical engineering
faculty are key participants in these programs.
Terminal MS/ME students
are not eligible to receive financial aid from the department.
