Graduate Overview

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Virginia was founded in 1908 and today continues a strong tradition of excellence in both research and education.

We are a nationally-ranked department comprised of an energetic faculty leading first-rate research programs. These programs cover a diverse range of topics including biotechnology, nanotechnology, future energy sources, fuel cells, catalysis, environmental engineering, computer and molecular simulation, electrochemistry, materials development, separations technology and thermodynamics. Faculty and graduate students draw on the wide range of excellent research facilities available in the department and participate in a number of multidisciplinary research centers across the School of Engineering and the University of Virginia.

There are approximately 50 students in our graduate program with over 95% studying towards a Ph.D. All students accepted into our doctoral program may expect to receive financial support as long as they maintain satisfactory progress towards the degree. Around 15 additional students are participating in the distance learning Masters of Engineering program (CGEP). Our graduates go on to pursue a diverse range of successful careers in both industry and academia working in fields including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, energy materials development and electronics.

The faculty follow the Jeffersonian principle of excellence in education coupled to strong faculty-student interaction. We maintain a high faculty/student ratio and operate an open-door policy for faculty offices whereby students are free to stop in to discuss their research, science, careers or life in general.

The faculty have won a number of prestigious awards including the following:

  • NSF CAREER Awards (6)
  • NSF National Young Investigator Award
  • Camille & Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award
  • ONR Young Investigator Award
  • AICHE Wilhelm Award in Reaction Engineering
  • Union Carbide Innovation Recognition Award
  • North American Catalysis Society Emmett Award
  • ASEE Teaching Awards (2)
  • Rodman Scholars' Teaching Awards (2)
  • DuPont Young Faculty Awards (2)
  • DuPont Young Professor Awards (2)
  • Ford Motor Company Young Faculty Award
  • 3M Nontenured Faculty Award
  • UVA President's Prize for Research

Faculty have also been elected Fellows of the AIChE (4), AAAS (2) and AIMBE (4).

We take pride in the breadth of our accomplishments.
