Student-Faculty Interactions

In addition to a first-rate research program, we are strongly committed to teaching. Thomas Jefferson, the founder of the University of Virginia, laid the foundation for an "Academical Village". His legacy continues as we maintain a high faculty/student ratio (1/4) whereby the faculty work very closely with the students.

We believe that graduate school experience is much more than simply research and advanced training. We have an open door policy whereby students are free to stop in to discuss their research, science, their careers or life in general. We have family-like atmosphere whereby the students and faculty enjoy some of the finer points of life together as well.

We have a number of picnics, parties and informal gatherings that take place throughout the year. Although the graduate students have dominated the faculty on the volleyball and tennis courts, the faculty are beginning to reverse this trend. In addition, it's rumored that Bob Davis is the clear favorite on the tennis court, Ramon Espino is the paddle tennis King, Jack Hudson is unstoppable in handball and Jim Oberhauser is tough to hit in slow-pitch softball. So if you do decide to join us, please be prepared for more than just an academic challenge!
