The written Preliminary
Examination is to be taken before beginning classes after
the first two academic terms of enrollment as a full-time
chemical engineering graduate student. The examination will
have comprehensive coverage of the fundamental principles
of chemical engineering with emphasis on transport phenomena,
chemical reaction engineering and thermodynamics.
The format will
be open-ended, with integrative questions answered during
a multi-day period. Evaluation will be made of a student's
overall graduate performance, including the results of this
examination. The possible outcomes of this evaluation are
pass, pass with conditions or fail. Those students who fail
will not be permitted to take the Research Examination.
The Preliminary
Examination may not be retaken. The Preliminary Examination
will be offered once each year, normally in late May. Students
who enter with Bachelor's degrees in the spring term or those
entering with a Master's degree from other institutions must
take the exam at the earliest opportunity as determined on
a case-by-case basis.
Students must
indicate in writing their intention to take the Preliminary
Examination when it is announced.
